Company Description:

For 25 years, Nightwood has developed, produced and toured landmark, award-winning plays by and about outspoken Canadian women. As Canada’s oldest professional feminist theatre, our unique and risk-taking approach has resulted in such renowned work as Good Night Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet) by acclaimed playwright and novelist Ann-Marie MacDonald which garnered Chalmers, Governor General's & Trillium awards, The Adventures of a Black Girl in Search of God by Djanet Sears which received a Dora Award, and Sonja Mills’ The Danish Play which went on to tour to Edmonton’s The Magnetic North Theatre Festival, Ottawa’s NAC and Denmark. Since its inception in 1979, play development has been in the forefront: in 1985, the company launched The Groundswell Festival which is now Canada's premiere play development program for new works by women. Write From The Hip, a novice playwrights program for 18 to 29 year olds, was implemented in 2000 and its little sister Busting Out, a theatre program designed for 12 to 15-year old girls, was inaugurated in 2004. 1983 saw the first FemCab, Nightwood’s notorious annual celebration of International Women’s Day – the 25th Anniversary FemCab featured the journalist and doyen of feminist thought Gloria Steinem.
